Life in the Long Grass - HKAL 2024 Dyer Spotlight

We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Caroline from Life in the Long Grass for the 2024 Hiberknitting season! To kick off the Hiberknitalong spirit, we asked Caroline about her favourite winter activities—and her answers are brimming with seasonal charm and creative inspiration.

For Caroline, winter in Ireland is all about invigorating outdoor walks, especially during the bright, chilly days before Christmas. These winter walks are refreshing, with plenty of sun and crisp air. Later in the season, when everything turns beautifully stark and grey, she heads to the sea to soak up the soft, muted colours.

These wintry scenes inspire Caroline’s dye work and knitting. She reaches for cool-tinted greys, almond, and rich burnt umber, contrasted with dark blues, pine greens, and warm sienna rusts. Her palette feels as cosy as it is connected to winter’s natural beauty, perfect for layering as temperatures drop.

And for keeping warm? Caroline’s post-walk ritual is a flask of steaming tea. There’s nothing like wrapping up in a hand-knit shawl and sipping tea after a seaside walk or a bracing cold dip.
